Top 3 Considerations When Choosing an AI Note Taking App
Imagine effortlessly capturing and organizing your thoughts, free from the clutter of traditional note-taking methods. AI note-taking apps are revolutionizing how we record and manage information, offering a blend of convenience and advanced features that cater to both students and professionals alike.
AI Capabilities
The core of any AI note-taking app lies in its artificial intelligence features. Look for apps that offer advanced natural language processing, which allows the app to understand context and meaning in your notes, not just keywords. High-quality voice recognition and transcription are crucial if you often take voice notes or record meetings.
The sophistication of these AI features can significantly impact how effectively the app organizes, retrieves, and interprets your notes, ultimately affecting your productivity and the app's overall usefulness.
User Interface and Experience
A well-designed user interface should be intuitive, allowing you to take notes quickly and efficiently without a steep learning curve. Look for apps that offer customization options, allowing you to tailor the layout and organization to your preferences. The app should also be flexible enough to accommodate different note-taking styles, whether you prefer to type, draw, or dictate your notes.
A good AI note-taking app enhances your natural note-taking process rather than forcing you to adapt to its system.
Being a former UX/UI developer/designer at Microsoft I take the UI very seriously. We used to have to take out a ruler to make sure our lines were straight. There is just a lot that goes into building a good UI. But truthfully, I do take the UX experience seriously.
Cross-Platform Availability
The ability to access your notes across multiple devices is crucial. Consider whether the app is available on all the platforms you use regularly – this might include smartphones (both iOS and Android), tablets, web browsers, and desktop operating systems like Windows and macOS. However, mere availability isn't enough; the experience should be consistent and high-quality across all platforms.
Pay attention to how well the app syncs between devices. Fast, reliable synchronization ensures that you always have access to your latest notes, regardless of which device you're using. Some apps might offer additional features on certain platforms, so consider which capabilities are most important to you and on which devices you need them.
Napkin
Napkin AI is a visual note-taking and thinking tool designed to capture and organize ideas as they arise. It offers a user-friendly interface for jotting down thoughts and provides features such as magical associations to spark inspiration and resurface past ideas. I find it is helpful for
This is my number one idea catcher. There is a list of quotes around topics. You choose to investigate a topic and see what is written on a card in the app. The quote can then spur an idea to take place. I love it for brainstorming and it is only $5/month.
Napkin is described as a space for effortlessly capturing and recalling thoughts, making it easy to keep ideas alive and explore them in an inspiring way. Napkin AI is available for both mobile and desktop use, aiming to be a valuable tool for individuals looking to streamline their note-taking and ideation processes.

This means you can easily record personal notes, and link them with your calendar, ensuring you always stay on top of meetings and important events.
This app prioritizes privacy. During the setup, you are asked to create an encryption key. Safety first in this world I guess. It seems a little much but then who knows.

Kin
Kin is a cutting-edge personal AI assistant designed to enhance private life, currently available in beta for iOS and Android platforms. Developed in Copenhagen, Denmark, Kin offers round-the-clock support with patience, compassion, and a wealth of knowledge.
My favorite part is you can choose what tone of voice Kin will respond to you with. Honestly, this is more of a habit tracker and personal assistant than an AI note taking app, but it is so much fun to use I put it here anyway. The tone of voice I trained Kin on was to ‘Speak to me like a bro’. It’s fun, what can I say?
The AI assistant's functionality extends to various aspects of personal life. Kin helps users communicate more effectively, express their feelings, and gain new perspectives on life situations. It generates ideas and offers personalized answers to address a wide range of life challenges. Additionally, Kin assists in nurturing relationships, preparing for difficult conversations, and aiding in task management and prioritization.
Privacy and security are at the forefront of Kin's design.
The assistant employs a local-first approach, storing data directly on the user's device.
It utilizes Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) components for data encryption and user control.
One of Kin's main features is its advanced memory and learning capabilities.
Kin is in an open beta phase, with some features already live and others still in development.

It offers features such as AI chat, task management, and the ability to create template workflows. This is more than an AI note taking app. It is also an AI meeting notes app.
Mem AI is designed to infuse notes with AI to make them more useful and is available for individuals and teams. The entire workflow I found took a little getting used to, but once I figured out what the concept of a Mem was - like an object with attributes you control and edit - it became much easier to use.
The app is known for its fast and minimalist interface, and it also provides a feature called Mem Writer, which pairs notes with a generative AI to facilitate collaboration between the user and the AI.
Also, Mem AI allows users to ask questions and generate content based on the notes they have taken, serving as an ultimate knowledge assistant. The pricing for Mem AI is tailored for both individuals and teams, with a free plan available for individuals and a paid plan, Mem X, offering additional AI-powered features for both individuals and teams.
