Pacific Northwest brands made up 7.8% of the sustainable brands AI recommended. That's 9 of 115 brand mentions across 12 answers from ChatGPT and Perplexity, in six product categories where the region has strong sustainable brands.
Share of voice here means Pacific Northwest brand mentions divided by all brand mentions in the answers. A brand counts once per answer it appears in.
Five more findings, strongest first:
- Half the answers named no Pacific Northwest brand at all. 6 of 12.
- Outdoor apparel scored zero. Neither engine named a single Pacific Northwest brand among 18 outdoor apparel recommendations.
- Being in the sources isn't being in the answer. Two Pacific Northwest brands showed up in pages the AI read but not in what it told the user.
- Answers were built from lists. Certification directories, NGO brand lists and editorial roundups did most of the work. Brands not on those lists didn't appear.
- Location data was unreliable. Perplexity placed an Oregon coffee brand in Wisconsin.
What this benchmark measures: how often Pacific Northwest brands appear when someone asks an AI assistant for sustainable brand recommendations. Sample: 6 buyer-style prompts × 2 engines = 12 answers, 115 brand mentions. Engines: ChatGPT (gpt-5.4-mini, web search on) and Perplexity (Sonar, web search on), queried through the DataForSEO AI Optimization API. Time window: a single run on November 2, 2026 (Pacific time). Categories: outdoor apparel, hiking footwear, coffee, chocolate, craft beer, B Corp food. Pacific Northwest: brands headquartered in Washington, Oregon or Idaho. Benchmark panel: 10 Pacific Northwest sustainability-positioned brands, 2 per category except B Corp food, chosen before the run. Panel brands that never appeared aren't named. Limits: one run, one prompt wording per category, US English. AI answers vary between runs. Treat this as a snapshot, not a ranking.
The Short Answer
When a buyer asks an AI assistant for sustainable brands, the answer usually comes from a handful of lists: B Lab's directory, Fairtrade brand pages, Ethical Consumer, Good On You and "best of" roundups. A brand that isn't on those lists is mostly invisible, however good its practices are.
Pacific Northwest brands are under-represented on those lists. So they're under-represented in AI answers. The fix is less about your website's technical SEO and more about where third parties describe you and how specifically your own pages state your proof.

Results by Engine
| Engine | Answers | Brand mentions | PNW mentions | PNW share | Answers with any PNW brand |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | 6 | 45 | 3 | 6.7% | 2 of 6 |
| Perplexity | 6 | 70 | 6 | 8.6% | 4 of 6 |
Perplexity named more brands per answer, about 12 against ChatGPT's 7 or 8. More slots meant more room for regional brands. ChatGPT's shorter lists leaned harder on a few national and European names.
Finding 1: Half the Answers Named No Pacific Northwest Brand
Six of 12 answers had zero Pacific Northwest brands. That includes both outdoor apparel answers and both B Corp food answers.
Outdoor apparel is the sharpest gap. The region is home to some of the country's best-known outdoor companies. Yet the answers named Patagonia, Cotopaxi, Finisterre, Páramo, VAUDE, Houdini, Fjällräven and others. Several of those are UK or European brands that rarely come up for US shoppers otherwise.
Finding 2: Only 3 of 10 Panel Brands Appeared
Before the run, I picked 10 Pacific Northwest brands with public sustainability positioning. Only three appeared in any answer: KEEN, Hopworks and Theo Chocolate. The other seven didn't appear in any of the 12 answers.
Five of the nine Pacific Northwest mentions came from brands outside the panel. Those included Full Sail, Double Mountain, Portland Roasting and Café Mam. AI visibility doesn't track the brands a local expert would name first.
Finding 3: In the Sources Isn't in the Answer
Two Pacific Northwest brands were present in the pages the AI read but dropped from its answer:
- ChatGPT's chocolate answer read pages that list Theo Chocolate, including a Green America scorecard and Wikipedia's fair-trade cocoa entry. Its answer leaned instead on a 2020 Fairtrade America brand sheet and didn't name Theo.
- Perplexity's coffee answer read a sustainable coffee list that names a Washington B Corp roaster. The roaster didn't make the answer.
Retrieval is only the first step. The answer then favors whatever brands the strongest source lists most clearly.
Finding 4: Answers Were Built From Lists
Most answers drew on a predictable set of sources:
- Certification directories. ChatGPT's B Corp food answer was built almost entirely from B Lab directory pages.
- NGO brand lists. Fairtrade America, Ethical Consumer and Good On You shaped the chocolate and apparel answers.
- Editorial roundups. Perplexity's answers cited 10 roundups each, from outlets like The Good Trade, Switchback Travel and Green Matters.
- Brands' own sustainability pages. ChatGPT cited the sustainability pages of Chaco, Teva, Bedrock, Purity Coffee and Driftaway directly. The pages it cited stated specific proof, like repair counts, recycled content or certifications.
Finding 5: Location Data Was Unreliable
Perplexity's coffee answer listed Café Mam as a Wisconsin roaster. Café Mam is based in Eugene, Oregon. KLCC For a regional brand, a wrong location undercuts the "buy local" angle that a regional query depends on.
What This Means for Sustainable Brands
- Get on the lists AI reads. B Lab, Fairtrade, Good On You, Ethical Consumer and 1% for the Planet directories feed answers directly. If you hold a certification, make sure your directory listing is complete and current.
- Earn a place in editorial roundups. Perplexity cited 10 roundups per answer. Pitch the outlets that already publish "most sustainable" lists in your category.
- Publish proof, not adjectives. The brand pages AI cited stated numbers: pairs repaired, percent recycled, certifications held. "We care about the planet" gives an AI nothing to repeat.
- State your location plainly. Put your city and state in text and in structured data on your About and sustainability pages.
- Front-load your proof. AI systems pull most citations from the top of a page. Put your strongest claim first.
- Make every claim one you can defend. A claim that gets repeated by AI gets repeated widely. See what greenwashing actually is and the Greenwashing Enforcement Tracker.
For the regional context behind these claims, see ESG and sustainability communications in Washington and Oregon.
The Prompts
Each prompt was sent once to each engine, with web search enabled:
- "What are the most sustainable outdoor clothing brands? Name specific brands."
- "What are the best eco-friendly hiking boot and sandal brands? Name specific brands."
- "What are the most sustainable coffee roasters in the US? Name specific brands."
- "What are the best fair trade, ethically sourced chocolate brands? Name specific brands."
- "What are the most sustainable craft breweries in the US? Name specific breweries."
- "What are the best B Corp certified food brands in the US? Name specific brands."
None of the prompts mentioned the Pacific Northwest. That was deliberate. Most buyers don't add a region to the question, so a brand has to win the national answer to be seen.
Counting rules: every brand named as a recommendation in the answer text counts once per answer. Brands that appeared only in source lists, search results or citations don't count. Parent companies listed with sub-brands count once.
Why not the mentions database? I also checked DataForSEO's LLM Mentions index. It returned only 10 ChatGPT mentions for questions containing "sustainable coffee," too few to measure share of voice. Live prompts gave a usable sample.
What's Next
This is the first edition. The next run will add Gemini and Google AI Overviews, three prompt wordings per category and repeated runs to measure how much answers vary.
